Our Mission
Hello, my name is Peter Klein, owner of Capital Coin Appraisals. I started this business becasue I recognized a need in the coin marketplace. Although we have several reputable coin dealers and shops in the area, there are few individuals who specializes in working with estate coin collections.
Coin collecting is generally a solitary pursuit. Even when the collector shares some information about their coins with non-collecting family and friends, no one knows the entire collection as well as the individual who assembled it. And, with the inevitable aging, illness or passing of the original collector, a family member or loved one who is unfamiliar with the collection is often tasked with the responsibility to divide, disperse or preserve these items. Even if that person knows a little about coins, they generally are not aware of current market conditions or coin values. Nor are they prepared to answer questions from other family members or interested parties.
Capital Coin Appraisals was started to serve the needs of these individuals. Obviously, we welcome the opportunity to serve the needs of all collectors, new or old, but our specialty is estate appraisal and liquidation. I have firsthand knowledge of what it is like to inherit a large collection and then divide and disperse the coins among family members. It can be a difficult and trying task, especially if your knowledge of coins and the current coin market is limited. However, with CCA as your partner, that task can be both manageable, enjoyable and profitable.
How it Began
I have been involved with coin collecting for almost 40 years. My introduction to collecting was the same as with many others in the hobby. As a young boy I began collecting Lincoln Cents to earn a scouting merit badge. Even at that young age I was taken with the history each coin had locked inside. This fascination is still with me today. I look at a 1929 Buffalo nickel and wonder, "Was this the last nickel left in the pocket of an investor who had just seen the stock market collapse?" Or, I stare at an 1864 2-Cent piece and wonder if it was used to purchase goods for a soldier who had just faced his own brother in battle. Perhaps that coin had even once resided in the pocket of Abraham Lincoln as he worked to end the fighting. The possibilities are fascinating and endless.....
For much of the last forty years I have continued to collect coins. Less in lean times and more in bountiful ones. But, thin or flush, coins have always been dear to me. Before I made the transition from life-long hobbyist to professional, I thought it important enhance my formal education. To that end, I have completed the Numismatics Diploma Program governed by the American Numismatic Association. The ANA is recognized by the Congress of the United States as the official organization of coin collecting.
Through a comprehensive course of study that included written material, video instruction and live classroom instruction conducted at ANA headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado, I successfully completed the ANA Numismatic Diploma Program and earned the title Numismatic Scholar.
This designation was based on passing several individual courses including: Grading US Coins, Detecting Counterfeit and Altered US Coins, The Modern Minting Process, and others. I was fortunate enough to pass exams in most of these individual disciplines either with "Honors" or "High Honors." I found the education I received valuable and necessary.
It is this education and life experience that will be put to work for every client of Capital Coin Appraisals.
In addition to the ANA certification, I belong to several professional organizations including: Life Member of the ANA, Member of the American Numismatic Society, Member PCGS, Member NGC, Authorized Dealer for ICG. I am also working towards membership and certification by the American Society of Appraisers(ASA).
Coins and coin collecting means a great deal to me. Not a single day passes that I am not surprised by another aspect of coin collecting. It brings joy and meaning to my life. I consider myself a lucky person to earn a living in the field of numismatics.
As we develop this site I will include links to many organizations, individuals and websites that can provide valuable information to collectors of every level.
